The Situation in the Aftermath of Destruction

The Highland Support Project has consulted with our women's circles in the highlands of Guatemala, and we have identified the priority needs in our partner communities. The primary concern at this time is recapitalizing agricultural production in the region, following the destruction of this season's harvest.  The majority of our partner families exist from one harvest to the next, and the proceeds of the last harvest are reinvested into the coming harvest. Therefore, a lost harvest is a severe devastation with long-lasting repercussions.  The immediate need for food is being met by relief organizations, but past experience has shown that when short-term, emergency supplies run out, there is still a shortage of food.  For at least the next six months, women will need assistance to feed their families until new crops can be harvested.  HSP will be working with women in our partner communities during this transitional period to reestablish the local market and provide the income necessary to enable these women to provide for their families.
